Official path
2-step verification settings page → 2FA Settings → Available Methods → Authenticator app → Set up Before you start
- Use a desktop browser for the initial setup when possible.
- Keep the phone and mobile app associated with the account available.
- Set up more than one 2-step method so one broken device does not block access.
Setup steps
- 01
Open the security settings page
Sign in to the 2-step verification settings page from a web browser, then check 2FA Settings.
- 02
Set up the authenticator app
Under Available Methods, select Set up next to Authenticator app and follow the prompts.
- 03
Complete the app prompt
Coinbase shows a QR code or pairing flow, then asks you to confirm the code from the authenticator app.
- 04
Add another backup method
Set up Security Prompt, a passkey, a security key, or Trusted contacts before you rely on the authenticator alone.
Recovery and backup
Use Try another way
If the current method fails, choose Try another way on the sign-in screen and pick an available backup method.
Follow the recovery process
If Authenticator app is your only method and the device is lost, use the official 2-step verification troubleshooting flow.
Prepare trusted contacts
Trusted contacts can approve account recovery requests, but they are not a replacement for normal 2-step verification prompts.
Common problems
Multiple methods are recommended
Coinbase strongly recommends more than one 2-step method so you are not locked out by one missing device.
Mobile app and web differ
The main setup flow is easier in a desktop browser, while the mobile app handles push prompts and security prompt setup.
Trusted contacts are recovery-only
Trusted contact approval can help with account recovery, but it cannot approve ordinary 2-step verification requests.
