Official path
User Settings → My Account → Password and Authentication → Multi-Factor Authentication → Enable Authenticator App Before you start
- Sign in on the device where you want to keep Discord active.
- Install a TOTP app first so you can copy or scan the secret immediately.
- Save the backup codes as soon as Discord shows them.
Setup steps
- 01
Open account settings
On desktop, go to User Settings, then My Account, then Password and Authentication. On mobile, open Account from the profile menu and choose Enable Authenticator App.
- 02
Add the authenticator
Use Enable Authenticator App, then scan the QR code or copy the secret into your authenticator app.
- 03
Enter the login code
Type the current one-time code into Login with your code and choose Activate.
- 04
Confirm and save backup codes
Finish the confirmation step and keep the Backup codes in a safe place before you sign out.
Recovery and backup
Open backup codes
Go back to User Settings, then My Account, then View Backup Codes if you are still signed in.
Use a backup code at login
At the MFA prompt, choose Verify with something else, then Use a backup code, enter one unused code, and confirm.
Use the alternate path only if offered
If Discord offers SMS or another method, use it only when the code path is unavailable and you trust the device.
Common problems
Support cannot reset MFA for you
Discord Support cannot remove MFA or generate new backup codes on your behalf.
Backup codes are one-time use
Once a code is used, it cannot be used again, so store every unused code safely.
SMS is only a fallback
SMS recovery is weaker and may not appear unless the account already has that option enabled.
