Official path
Settings & privacy → Settings → Accounts Center → Password and security → Two-factor authentication → Authentication app Before you start
- Sign in before you start; Facebook only lets you add a third-party authenticator while the account is accessible.
- Prefer the Accounts Center path first, but keep the older Security and Login Settings path in mind.
- Keep the account email and phone number available for the setup flow.
Setup steps
- 01
Open the settings path
From Settings & privacy, open Settings, then Accounts Center, then Password and security.
- 02
Choose the authenticator app
Open Two-factor authentication, select the account, and choose Authentication app, then follow the on-screen steps.
- 03
Confirm the login code
Enter the code from the app and continue until Facebook finishes the setup.
- 04
Save recovery codes
Open Additional methods, then Recovery codes, and save the set before you leave the page.
Recovery and backup
Get new recovery codes
Use Additional methods, then Recovery codes, then Get new codes if you still have access.
Try other sign-in options
If login fails, open Need another way to authenticate? and follow Other Options or Get more help.
Keep the old path as a fallback
If Accounts Center is unavailable, the older Security and Login Settings path may still be shown to some users.
Common problems
Logged-in prerequisite
Only users who can already sign in can add a third-party authenticator.
Old and new settings paths
Not every account sees the Accounts Center layout, so the older security path still matters.
Recovery code count
Facebook provides 10 recovery codes, and each one can be used only once.
